When shopping around to find a cake for a special event, for me, the aesthetic appeal is just as important as taste. Traditionally, we have seen dyed icing , rosettes in a rainbow of hues and the sudden popularity of fondant. But there are some cake designers that go above and beyond and create “cake art” ! Here are my top 3 Cake Designers .
1. WHIPPED BAKESHOP 636 Belgrade Street, Philadelphia, PA 19125
Hailing from our very own city of Philadelphia, Zoe Lukas’ studied Painting at the Maryland Institute of Art before returning home to open her very own sweets shop. But before taking the plunge to go out on her own, Zoe gained a lot of experience working at 3 of the city’s top bakeries. The Whipped Baked Shop opened in 2007 and has been noted in numerous local publications. Using only natural ingredients, Zoe’s desserts are created to be ” savored and shared”. Check out some of her best work!
2. Charm City Cakes 301 S. Light Street, Baltimore, MD 21202
Chef Duff Goldman started out making cakes for family and close friends and his undeniable talent and creativity caught on like wild fire! Now he operates his business on a 6,000 square foot “cake compound” along with a staff of eleven bakers and decorators just as imaginative as himself! If you are unable to get to Baltimore to get a slice from Charm City, you can pick up Chef Duff’s line of cakery products at Michael’s craft store. Look at what Charm City’s been baking up!
3. Maggie Austin CAKE Washington, DC Metropolitan Area
A former professional ballet dancer, Maggie Austin has studied fine pastry at one of the world’s most renown culinary arts schools in the world, The French Pastry School. Maggie’s sweet masterpieces are nothing short of breathtaking. She uses fondant and icing as her canvas to hand paint florals and prints onto cakes that you will never wish to cut. She has taken cake decorating to a whole new plateau. See for yourself.
Breathtaking!!!! All of these designers have an amazing talent! Who are some of your favorite cake designers?
